What are Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs)?Updated 15 hours ago
Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) are specialized, non-digestible carbohydrates found abundantly in human breast milk—over 200 unique types have been identified. While they are the third most abundant solid component in breast milk (after lactose and lipids), HMOs aren’t there to feed the infant directly. Instead, they feed the infant’s microbiome, acting as prebiotics that selectively nourish beneficial gut bacteria, especially Bifidobacterium infantis.
While naturally found only in breast milk, advanced fermentation and precision biotechnology now allow us to replicate select HMOs for adult use—human-equivalent, bioidentical, and highly purified. These HMOs are not sourced from animals or dairy, and are safe, vegan, and well-tolerated.
At kēpos, we’ve pioneered the world’s first gut health supplement built on human milk-equivalent bioactives—starting with HMOs. This isn’t just innovation, it’s a return to human biology’s original blueprint.
